CHALLENGE

The energy industry faces an array of challenges, and in order to optimize wind farms and turbines, companies need tools and technology to measure performance, function, external data, and more. Our client needed a big data solution to enable better servicing and business decisions.

SOLUTION

To address our client’s challenges, we created a “Big Data Platform,” which included real-time data from multiple data inputs, API integration into their ERP with failure codes, improved performance, enhanced data processing with new SAP HANA database, and improved facility monitoring.

The platform was able to reduce redundant processing, report times, and database size.

THE CHALLENGE

Renewable energy producers face an array of challenges, from policy, regulations, and market uncertainty to lack of market access and high operational and maintenance costs. In order to optimize wind farms and turbines, renewable energy companies need tools and technology that allow them to measure, in real time, the performance, function, output, etc. of turbines while also taking into account external data sources, including location and geospatial data, weather forecasts, enterprise resource planning data (financial, purchase data, lease dates etc.), operational data, and resource management. Our client sought a big data solution to optimize processing time, improve real-time capabilities and intelligence about their wind farm, and enable better servicing and business decisions. Their challenges included:

  • Multiple Data inputs
    • Operational SCADA data through PI
    • Financial, contact, & lease data from ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning Platform)
    • Asset & maintenance data from EAM
    • Location & geospatial data from ArcGIS
    • Syndicated sources like weather, OEM
  • Massive database of 5.6 million records (and growing)
  • Slow reporting and analysis
  • Wind turbines failing or producing low energy not caught until opportunities lost
  • No real time feedback or reporting

THE SOLUTION

To help overcome our client’s challenges, our ITHENA team created a “Big Data” platform. This platform was able to deliver real-time data from SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), to sensors from turbines and windfarms. It also provided proactive identification of failure & low energy production. We provided API integration into ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) for WO (Work Objects) creation with failure codes. To help with improved performance, we provided a solution for optimization of records within the database to reduce size for improved performance. Our solution also enhanced data processing with new SAP HANA database implementation. Lastly, our data platform improved facility monitoring with sensor technology.
